x-mas puppies

A few days ago I walked into a vet's office to get a health certificate for one of our pups that was being shipped. The room was packed! And I mean PACKED! The sad thing? 90% of the dogs were all puppies. Judging by the time of the year, I'm sure they were all x-mas presents. One lady there had 2 actually, two Boxer puppies, a male and a female. I sure hope and pray none of those babies end up in shelters.

I've been seeing an influx on CL, too....."boyfriend got him for me for Christmas," "girlfriend got him for XMas," etc.

At least they're trying to do right(by being at the vet).Lets hope they continue to be responsible owners.

Gosh, I hope folks don't automatically judge me as irresponsible just cause I did THE RIGHT THING and took my new companion to the vet. Judge not, I believe it goes.........

Re: x-mas puppies

I don't think you get what the complaint is and it's not that people are taking their new puppies to the vet - that is the right thing. The problem is with people giving puppies for Christmas and then they end up getting rid of them within a month or two as the people didn't really want or wasn't ready for a puppy. Giving puppies as gifts is a disaster waiting to happen and it's usually the puppy that loses in the end.

Re: x-mas puppies

I see your point. It would seem to be very basic common sense that you don't give a live present to someone that doesn't REALLY want it or doesn't have the ability to care properly for it.
I know it does happen and just missed what this thread was about entirely.

Re: x-mas puppies

That's not always the case--last year my Maggie Dog and my mother's dog died right before Christmas, so we got Anna and mom got Rebel not long after. We had both puppies at her house for Christmas. I've heard of at least six people I know personally losing their pets this year right before Christmas-one of which went and adopted two pittie pups from a humane society a few days later.

Some of these pups may not be gifts, but puppies for a greiving family who will love it just as they did their former companions. Just sayin.
