Too old for a walk?

I just got in from taking Stark out to potty and a short walk around the neighbourhood and ran into another dog owner.

She had a 9 year old mix breed who looked to be in good health (a tad overweight), we got talking about our dogs and the freezing temperatures today.. BRRR!!!

She said that she doesn't take her dog on many walks, if any because he is just too old to go for walks.

I asked her if he had any health issues and she told me no.

I told her that my 12.5 almost 13 year old dog still goes for 2-3 walks per day. Yes, they are A LOT SHORTER than they use to be, but still goes for them. They are more of a sniff here, crawl/walk but she still enjoys getting out of the house, off the property and meeting new people.

Has anyone ever met or heard of a dog being "too old" to go for a walk if there are no health concerns? What are your thoughts on this?

Re: Too old for a walk?

The BEST thing you can do for an older dog is to take them on 2 to 3 walks a day. It keeps their bodies limber and keeps their mind active.

Re: Too old for a walk?

That's my opinion as well.

I mean, if the dog is able and willing then why wouldn't you, right?

I felt bad for this dog, I mean, 9 years old isn't THAT old where you have to REALLY limit their excerise unless of course there are health issues.

Re: Too old for a walk?

Jessie, who will be 12 this month goes for walks every day on our acreage. She acts like she is 3 or 4 years old. She also has no health problems. And she does this in the snow. She does sleep a lot more now and can't see or hear like she used to, but if you are going for a walk you better watch out cause she is more than ready.

Re: Too old for a walk?

I feel the same, especially with no health problems. We even get our 10 yr old Berner out to walk once a day and she is considered elderly by Berner standards.

Re: Too old for a walk?

I have an almost 15 year old shepherd mix. We still take her on walks everyday. Yes, the walks are much shorter than they used to be, and she is much slower than she used to be, but she still loves to go.

Re: Too old for a walk?

I posted about my first dog, William, a spaniel/retreiver mix in the "oldest age" thread. We did at least two walks a day well into his fourteenth year. It was only in the last three, four months of his life that we stopped the walks. I think that might just be an excuse from this lady for not wanting to take her dog for a walk. I believe that the regular daily walks helped William to stay active and healthy even past 9 years old.

Morgan says Bah don't tell my mom such things. At 8 1/2, she can still out walk Otto. Course she's taking a nap the rest of the day but she'll still out walk him just to prove she can.

Re: Too old for a walk?

We don't walk Max anymore unless he goes to the park on the grass. The hard surfaces really hurt his joints. So he goes to the park to walk.

Kayos is having a hard time keeping up with Havoc so they walk separately now, with 3 it seems Max does not get out much as he should but he still comes out and hangs with us in the yard and I try to take him out for a special trip every week.
