Best Advice?

What is the best training advice you have ever gotten? I am not talking about specific advice about a specific problem, I am talking about very general advice that influences all of your training.

Maybe best described as "words to live by" about training.

Re: Best Advice?

Never give your dog the opportunity to refuse a command while training.

Re: Best Advice?

only say a command once and never use force (ok, that's two, but I live by them both).

1. Learning occurs BETWEEN sessions. If he's not getting it, back up to something he does know and end on a good note. Let him sleep on it. He'll probably have the new skill down the next session.

I never thought of it that way! I live by start with something easy they know, go to a new command for 5 minutes, end with something easy they know. Works on the horse to but for longer training sessions.

Re: Best Advice?

If my dog doesn't "get" a behaviour/command it's not because he can't do it or doesn't want to do it, it is because I've not shown him correctly.

Joanne,
Spirit, Eli, and Aoibhe (Disabled GSD's)
Duncan, Sam, Carl and Tesla (Black Lab mixes who think all GSD's are airheads)

Re: Best Advice?

If I am not clear on what I want from my dog, my dog isn't going to be clear on what I want. And when clarifying what you want, think in terms of what behavior you can say "yes" to and not just in terms of what behavior you say "no" to.

If you don't have their attention, you can't teach them anything.
