Stunted Growth???

I got my pup at around six months and he was quite thin. He is in great shape now but I was wondering if him being underfed as a pup has affected his size? He seems pretty small for his age. He is 65 pounds about a year old.

Re: Stunted Growth???

It is possible, but

German Shepherd Dog Height and Weight Standard

Height at the wither 60 cm to 65 cm (23.62 inches - 25.59 inches)
Weight 30 kg to 40 kg. (66.14 pounds - 88.18 pounds; Midrange = 77 pounds)
Your boy is close to being within the range of standard. At one year old, he probably still has some growing to do. He's likely done growing UP, but he hasn't done filling OUT. I wouldn't be surprised if your dog put on several additional pounds. How much depends upon his lines, his diet, his idiosyncratic growth pattern (it IS possible to "make up" growth somewhat) and genetics.

He may never be a dog that's at the top of the range. But he may not have been destined for that anyhow, regardless of the diet that he was fed. His parents may have both been on the small size, so he simply is carrying forward that genetic trait. Or, he may have simply been a smaller (or the smallest) pup in the litter and although he grew at a normal rate, he simply never "caught up" to regular size pups.

Re: Stunted Growth???

Some lines can add 10, 15, 20 pounds after the first year.

Re: Stunted Growth???

My 9 month old male is only 63 pounds and very proportional already. He was fed a very quality food from the beginning. The dogs from his parents have always been quick growers, hitting most of their size early on.

His 3 year old brother is 85lbs and was probably about 75lbs at that age. His 2 year old sister is about 70lbs and was similar to him. I figure he will finish out about 70-75lbs. He's just a little smaller, but still within normal. His Sire is an 80lb male adn his Mom is a good sized 75lb female.

It can be hard sometimes if you are used to seeing big or oversized dogs to stop thinking "Oh my goodness he's small!" With the 2 other males in my house being 85+ lbs, it makes him look little...but the truth of the matter is that they're just big. And what he lacks is size...boy does he make up for it in speed and agility!

Re: Stunted Growth???

Mine is 2 years old and only weighs 71lbs and looks great . size wise i consider him med. to a small male. he does have EPI and wasnt treated for it until he was 1o months which could have contributed to his growth however he looks terrific now but small and MANAGEABLE !

Re: Stunted Growth???

My 3 yr old girl is 50 pounds. Everyone who sees her thinks she is still a puppy or a "mini-GSD". However, 50# is a wonderful size! It's all the goodness of the breed, in a smaller package that is easier to travel with, eats less, and has smaller poo.
