A second dog

When you get a second GSD, would/did you get a puppy or an older one? I have a 4 year old female, we lost ( illness ) her sister a few months back. I have been looking for an older GSD PB rescue or a boxer but cannot find one. I am getting the vibe my female really likes bigger GSD males. She seems to really really like other GSDs, but REALLY likes males. Other breeds she is not so quick to want to play with. I think she is racist against breeds.

I had a few leash aggression issues I seem to have cured by NOT letting my father in law walk my dog. I would describe my sheppy as a perfect dog. If I had to write out a list of what I wanted in a dog, she would be it.

So, puppy or adult? Do male / females ever fight?

Re: A second dog

If your girl likes larger males, you're better off getting an adult. You never know what size a puppy will end up being. He could end up being short, even shorter than your girl. Looking at the sire's and dam's size is a guideline, but it's not a guarantee. So go to a rescue and get her EXACTLY what she wants.

My experience is that females and males aren't likely to fight (again, not guaranteed, but far better odds than a female/female pairing). My young male/female pair will squabble, but invariably it's over something ridiculous that they shouldn't have in the first place (the cardboard from the toilet paper roll, for example, when there are rawhides and bones all over the place). I've never had my males and females actually "fight."

Well, that should settle the question of whether to get a puppy for you.

Lol! Diabla is the same way.She sees a female, she ignores her. She sees a male of a smaller breed... she ignores him. She sees a big male and she gets flirtatious and invites him to play and chase her...

Re: A second dog

ever GSD I've ever met has been this way. even if they like other dogs, a GSD is still always their favorites. Rayden really REALLY dislikes other dogs. If they stay away, he is happy to just ignore them. but out for a walk and he sees or hears another GSD he gets all excited and does the happy dance. When we introduced him to Freya, he was beside himself with excitement that he actually got to play with her

How about this guy, 60 days in a shelter 2 hours from me.

I am sure we will get a few good years, but he looks like he needs a home.

Well it will not be that one. I had a buddy check him out. Rex wants to eat kids.
