Does your male mark indoors?

Hi all. I am sure this comes up in before, but a search didn't return quite what I was looking for.

Growing up we have had and been around mostly female dogs, with some relatives with males. There has always been this stigma about males marking in the house. I contend that this is a training issue.

What have you noticed? What have your experiences been?

I had a discussion with my mom (I am grown and have my own house now, etc.) and she is of the camp thinking males mark in the house and cant be stopped. She talked to a friend of hers who's males keep marking in the house. Knowing the friend, I still contend its a training issue. I have just put a deposit down on a Male and I told her I would bet we dont have the problem, and that I dont set myself up for failure.

So what is your experience?

Re: Does your male mark indoors?

Urro is now 5 and has not had one "accident" ever... in the house. Many people I know have had males in the house without them ever marking.

It is indeed a training issue.

Re: Does your male mark indoors?

I dog sat a GSD mix who marked several times in our home. Once on an upholstered chair, and even worse he lifted his leg and peed on our dj rack and fried our amp and mixer. I am quite happy to have females.

I've never heard such a thing. Nikon does not mark in the house and I don't know any males that do other than really old, incontinent dogs.

Re: Does your male mark indoors?

Talon is the first male dog I have ever owned. He is 4 years old, and intact. He has NEVER once marked on ANYTHING inside the house. I too think it is a training issue. To me it was as simple as teaching him to potty outside, not inside. Why would he mark if he knows he is to always potty outdoors? And yes, he does mark outdoors.

Re: Does your male mark indoors?

Doggydog,

I believe that if a dog was allowed or has a habit of marking indoors, he's obviously going to continue the behavior unless he's trained otherwise. My mother and sister once babysat a friend's neutered male Shiba Inu at their house and I got a call the first day from them, extremely upset because the dog was marking their house. I told them if it were me, friend or not, that dog would be at a boarding kennel the same evening at the owner's expense. If it's marking in their house, it was marking at the owner's and the owner conveniently "forgot" to inform them of that.
