So much for the buy-out not affecting quality!
For those who haven't been tracking the thyroid issue, this problem is a function of not being careful in the meat purchased and used in food production -- letting suppliers send them "whatever parts," or throwing "whatever parts" into the rendering vat.
If the meat includes part of the cow's thyroid gland, it is like putting a blast of thyroid hormone in the batch -- for dogs who have thyroid disease, that badly screws up carefully calibrated medicine levels by OD'ing them with too much thyroid hormone since they already are already getting very specific doses of it by RX. For healthy dogs who don't have thyroid problems, you can end up with temporarily elevated thyroid levels just from them eating this stuff -- if you happen to do your annual T4 screen while feeding this stuff, it may come back as elevated....which the vet will probably think it means your dog has a thyroid tumor if he/she doesn't know about this....and you'll have a needless cancer scare.
This link describes the symptoms of elevated thyroid hormone so people know what to look for:
This has been a problem with several brands in the last few years.
