Increasing food?

This may seem like a stupid question, but how fast should I increase my puppy's food? She's got a voracious appetite and she's growing fast. I've been increasing it a little bit, but I'm not sure how fast I should increase it. I would think she would need more and more for her growing little body. Does anyone have a good rule of thumb for this? If I fed her as much as she'd like to eat she'd probably explode...

Re: Increasing food?

If the bag doesn't have a guideline for puppies, I'd try between 1-1/2 to 2 times as much for a puppy as for an adult of the same weight. So as her weight goes up, the amount you feed her goes up too. But that's a general guideline - if she seems too skinny increase a bit more, if she's starting to look chubby, cut back a little. As her growth rate slows down, say around 6 months old, you can start cutting the quantity back gradually until eventually she's at the adult amount, or whatever amount will keep her at the proper condition. I remember running my hand down the sides of my dogs daily as they were growing puppies to check their condition.

What are you feeding her? BTW, she's sure a cutie!

You go by what the dog looks like.. Not by her "voracious appetite."

I have a pup here who's about 4 months.. And he gets no more then the bigger dogs get.. which is about 1 to 1-1/2 cups twice a day, plus he gets treats.. (when training or not) Right now he's at an ideal weight for his body size.. He's got a tuck and you can slightly feel his ribs.. If I notice him looking too thin, then I will bump his portion up slightly!

If I/we were to gauge it by his appetite, he'd eat all day, just like my older dogs would.. They act like there starving, but that's because there food drive is so high..

Re: Increasing food?

Agree, the key is the weight/apearance of the dog. Thin to medium is fine. Mine eat more them yours, but each animals metbolism is different.
