Food help

Hello all!!

We recently picked up or 8 week old GSD puppy and we love him! When we were at the vet this morning our vet frowned upon the food that we are feeding him. We feed him "taste of the wild puppy." It's what our breeder recommended and feeds his dogs. The vet said that we needed to switch foods to a "large breed" formula. Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were. If we were to switch we would switch to royal cannin. I'm a little skeptical about what she was saying due to the fact that she said we need to neuter our puppy ASAP due to him getting "too aggressive" and I don't agree with that. As a side note this was at a petsmart vet, we got the puppy kit and decided to use it for the free exam they aren't our regular vet. They won't be our regular vet.

There is a Taste of the Wild puppy formula, but I don't know anything about it. I would not feed TOTW adult. Royal Canin wouldn't be my first choice either. If you do use a puppy food I would definitely go with a large breed formula.

You don't need to neuter your puppy right away, and there are many reasons why waiting longer would be better. His temperament will determine whether or not he becomes aggressive, not whether or not he's neutered.

I've used Orijen with great success, and I know others here have highly recommended Fromm. I'm sure there are more, those are just two that I'm aware of. Orijen is quite expensive, not sure how it compares to Fromm.

You may not find the best foods at chains like PetSmart or Petco. I buy my food online from Chewy.com at quite a bit less than I can buy it at the small boutique stores that carry it locally. Orders over $49 ship free.

Sorry, what is a good large breed puppy food that doesn't cost $100/lb?

Well, I did mention that Orijen is quite expensive. At Chewy.com it's $72.99 for 28.6 pounds, so that's $2.55 per pound. Orijen Puppy Large Breed Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

They also carry Fromm, it's quite a bit less at $51.99 for a 33 pound bag, $1.58 per pound. Fromm Gold Holistic Large Breed Puppy Dry Dog Food

There's a 15% difference in the kcals per cup - Orijen is 456, Fromm is 389. You'd feed less Orijen to get the same amount of nutrition as Fromm, but it's not a huge difference.

This website may be of help to you:

Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor

After you read up Large breed puppy foods then go price shopping for the brands you think you'll like. I recommend buying small bags at first to make sure your puppy likes the food you choose.
