Restrained recalls are the first thing we do with dogs who are rehabbing from an injury in flyball.
Yes I held the tug at my side with my hand on the outside for her to grab as she ran by when she was a pup. Will do that again at short distance and am grateful for the suggestion. The PT doesn't know my dog, she wants me to start easy tug soon, Yana doesn't do easy tug, she's got a lot of fight and pull, will hold off on tug until the new year too. As for restraining her for recalls I'd probably have to pay a trainer or go to an IPO club which I don't really want to do until May.

Since we're on the topic, I'm not thrilled with Sams clinic PT, all they did was cold laser and suggested exercises. Would you pm or just give me the name of a PT you like at that Oakland clinic?

We saw several different people at HVC. Sandy Gregory is the main rehab tech, she's really good. Betsy worked with Halo a lot in the pool too. I don't know if you can request a specific person, we had a regular schedule of twice weekly swims that was usually but not always on Tuesday and Thursday, and saw whoever was working that day. The program was in Halo's records, so anyone could follow it.

But Yana's rehab would be a bit different since she has a specific injury. Halo was never going to improve, it was more about keeping up her muscle strength and mobility as long as possible. I'd probably just give them a call and tell them what you're looking for and see what they suggest.

A retriever dummy may work - they don't bounce. I'd think maybe the dead fowl one if you are concerned your dog would think the regular kind are tugs. There are even kinds you can make heavier by filling with water. This article explains the different kinds and why the dummies are sometimes called bumpers:

I know you said you didn't want balls. This ball-type suggestion is a little different. I've used a fetch ball with prior dogs, called Go-Frrr Fetch Ball. It's used like a sling shot, with a plastic piece that serves as a sling shot. There is a rubber loop attached to the ball. It doesn't bounce very much. You can try different launching strategies, to minimize the bouncing.

Just google it, you will find the website. It's presented as a dog toy and a people toy.

Its not the actual toy or whether its bouncing or laying still with these dogs. Its the way they attack it when they get to it. You can alter the retrieves into more of a find it game where its out of sight and they hunt for it, but if they can see it, they almost always hit it with everything they've got.

Yeah but the front end is taking the force more so than the Iliopsoas I think? Vs. contorting, jumping, twisting to catch a bouncing ball.
As you suggested I’m going to hold off for a couple months then start out with really short tosses and hang onto her collar until the ball or object comes to rest.
I do miss launching a ball via big chuck it, having her bolt and catch it on a hop. May never get back to that ☹️
