This says it all!

Time itself is a very powerful component of learning. So learn to wait. Learn to forgive. Learn to backup. It's all necessary for learning.

Teach! Teach! Teach! Be fair to your dog!

I have a neighbor who I like. He is a retired police officer and his golden retriever is friendly with my dog. They are both good easy dogs, will greet eachother calmly and then lay at our feet if we chat. Anyway our other neighbor has a dog-aggressive dog (the one who has attacked mine 5 times, and I reported them to Animal Control). That D.A. dog passed us and he was as usual, lunging, snarling, barking and acting like he wanted to kill my dog.

The retired police officer turned and said flatly to me,"The owner isn't doing anything. She needs to get control over that dog! If he were my dog, he'd have all four paws in the air." (I believe he was referring to the 'hanging on leash'.) Meanwhile I was thinking about things like "Heel" and changing his mean fearful attitude by giving him treats when he passes us! You can see how different people's philosophies are...

But he is a good dog owner, his dog is a pleasure, and I do respect his outlook - although it differs a LOT from mine.

I have also dispensed advice to this neighbor with the D.A. dog. She used to hit him on the side every time when he lunged/snarled (pretty hard, because I heard him yelp) and I told her that I thought this was making him worse...

( I have noticed a correlation between "angry dogs" and 'angry owners" but that's a topic for another thread! )
