Hiking with 4mo old pup

I have taken a couple short ~2mi. hikes with Tucker, who just turned 4mos (18wks today). This fall we plan on doing a bit more serious hiking...nothing crazy but maybe all day hikes with plenty of rest breaks).

Just looking for some input on how much is too much for him now, and in the coming months. We will be sticking to trails with decent footing, but there are always sticky spots and streams to cross. The small hikes we've been on haven't phased him energy-wise as he always bounces back to the car ready for more, but obviously I can't trust him to tell me when its too much for his developing body. Also any other advice on acclimating him to hiking? He is very well-behaved for his age (as a proud, bragging mom ) but I'm fairly new to serious hiking myself so any information is greatly appreciated!

Any advice/input? Thanks in advance

Well, I guess if you ask 10 people you get 10 different answers when it comes to this topic.
I definitely wouldn't hike with my puppy at all, 2 miles for a 4 months old puppy are too much IMO. I mostly stick to the "5 minutes per month" rule, but I'm just really cautious when it comes to it!
I start hiking, jogging etc. when my dogs are about one year old.
But let's see what the next poster has to say!

And a leisurely 2 mile hike for my pups maybe wouldn't be enough! OFF leash, so it's at the puppies pace means they walk, run and sit to wait for me to catch up

and we need to see PICTURES!

We've been hiking every few days with sabo, (well I do, hubby takes the easy way and goes to the park) and 1 1/2 to 2 miles is fine. When they slow, you slow, when they run, you run.
