Separation Anxiety

Hi guys,

My little guy Alpha is around 5 months and has pretty bad separation anxiety. When I go upstairs to do something I'll leave him downstairs and he will start whining and barking nonstop. To me this shouldn't be a huge issue and he should KNOW that I'm only upstairs, right? I'm not sure if I'm overreacting or if he really does have serious anxiety issues. Any ideas? How do I make it easier on him?

He's distressed because he wants to be near you. The only thing you can do is give him frequent brief time outs and let him out after he has settled down for a while. Gradually increase the time.
What do you do when you have to leave the house for a while?
I assume he is crate trained.

Yeah he is crate trained so I crate him when I leave the house. Usually when I crate and go upstairs he is fine and doesn't bark. I guess I didn't specify, sorry. What I mean is when I let him roam around and I go upstairs for a bit, he goes to the stairs and starts whining.
