Backing from Strangers

Well yesterday I took Matty 5 1/2 months on our weekly Petsmart and TSC trip for socializing and she backed away from strangers that were looking at her before going up to them. The people that were just walking by and not paying attention to her she sniffed at. She hasnt done this in the past...Is this just a phase and will the continued trips help remedy this problem? I also take her walking all the time and she has never reacted this way to people or dogs passing by...

Staring at a dog can be taken as a challenge or intimidation. Jax used to take it as a challenge and go a bit nuts.

It is just a phase but you still need to work on it. Take treats with you, ask them to treat her, tell them not to stare at her because it's unnerving her. She'll get over it.

btw..there are still some people that Jax will turn from. She doesn't back away from them but she will turn her head away from them. Generally, it is ppl that are not calm and seem a bit out of control.

Stosh just turned 6 mos and he has done that in the past, but I think he was mostly getting close to me to see for reassurance that they were ok. He's been very well socialized so he wasn't scared. Seemed like just a stage though, he hasn't done it lately.
