Age Recommendations

I've read through some previous topics and have an idea, but would like more detail.

What is the recommended age to take home your new GSD puppy? I know nothing under 8 weeks, but I hear 10 weeks is more ideal for any breed as far as socialization skill learned. What do people here typically do?

What is the age suggested to spay/neuter as I hear it can affect physical development if done too young. I hopefully will be showing my new dog, but I would like to be more knowledgeable about these dogs so I know what to look for in a breeder.

Thank you all for the help!

If all the pups leave the breeder at 8 weeks, then I would bring my pup home then too. Spay and neuter is so subjective, I would research past threads and decide for yourself. My opinion is to wait for maturity.

Kudos to you for doing research before bringing a pup home, less problems to deal with!

If you plan on showing your dog in conformation then you wouldn't neuter at all as the point is to judge breeding stock.

What to look for in a breeder?

Someone who shows and titles successfully their dogs.
Very few litters a year, no bitches bred twice a year.
OFA/CERF health testing on all bitches/sires.
Health guarantee.
Contract with breeder.
Pups socialized by them, preferably with starting crate training.
Pups kept inside, not a kennel or barn set up.
Doesn't let pups go before 8 weeks.
Seems knowledgeable on the breed and dogs in general.
No designer colors or terms.
