Are you as obsessed with me with socializing?

Stark turned 5 months old today and it got me thinking about how many other owners out there are as obsessed as me when it comes to socializing their dogs.

I made a promise to myself (and I guess to Stark as well) that we would expierence 1 new thing per week. Let that be a new hiking trail, meeting new people, playing with a new dog, visiting a new store, swimming, etc. and so far I have kept my promise. I want him to be the dog that breaks other's perception of the breed. I usually get wow, "he is super friendly", or "I have never met a GSD who was as friendly as him". These are the statements I love hearing.

I am obsessed with introducing new experiences to him. When asked to go somewhere I usually ask, "can I bring my puppy?". If the answer is no, I try to find something else we can all do that will include Stark. When out with my friends I usually talk about my new little guy. It's okay because there are 2 other friends of mine who have new puppies.. Haha.

I was just wondering if there are other owners out there who have the same obsession as me?

I do. I always want to take at least one of the dogs with us - even if we are just going to the drivethru food place or a quick shopping trip (weather permitting).

I think the dogs LIKE going out and about in the world.

I know Stark LOVES it. It's an all new territory to explore and romp around in.

My favorite part of introducing new things is seeing his nose to the ground and his tail going 100 miles per hour. You can see the smile on his face when he looks back at you then procceds to sniff further.. haha.

I swear before my friends got their dogs they thought I was crazy, but now our conversations revolved around dog food, dog poop and dog activities.. haha.

I'm totally with you. Not only is it fun, but I love spending so much time with my GSD.

He is about to be 10 months old and truly wakes up every day not knowing how his day will play out.

Re: Are you as obsessed with me with socializing?

Oh definitely. Kaylee goes as many places with us as possible. Besides tons of socializing, I'm always looking for a new "thing" for her to experience. We went looking this weekend for pedestrian tunnels to take her through. This weekend it'll be pedestrian bridges, over the highways. If I see a new surface, we head to it. ("Hm, I've never made her sit on a metal grate...let's go over there!"). Festivals, farmer's markets, coffee shops, whatever...sometimes she gets to meet people, sometimes she only gets to observe. She's always so happy to be with us, and so happy to have new people and places to look at and sniff.

Tonight she's going to my husband's softball game. I wasn't going to take her, but apparently his co-workers missed her when we didn't show up last week. :P

One of my favorite rites of initiation is taking them through a self serve car wash where you sit in the car and the scrubbies go back and forth. I always take along a cherished toy lol.

Good for you and your friends!!! It doesn't sound like obsession to me - it sounds like love

My kids have told me (now 25 and 18) that I have spent more time and effort socializing Dakota than I did them.

Me!!!!

As long as they aren't overwhelmed, I've yet to meet an oversocialized dog.

But shelters, rescues and backyards are full up with the under socialized pups.........

Re: Are you as obsessed with me with socializing?

I don't have a car, as I left it with my parents when I went away to school 4 years ago but whenever my parents or grandfather come down to visit (about twice a month) we always go through the car wash.

Stark LOVES it.. He does the "head tilt" non-stop. I always treat while we are going through the car wash too to make it a positive experience but he could care less about the food and just wants to watch the brushes and the suds.. haha..
