From a puppy to a dog

When does a canine go from a puppy to a dog? Mandalay will be 2 in January...will she then be a dog and no longer a puppy? Or was it last month when she turned 18 months old?

Re: From a puppy to a dog

I stop calling them a puppy at 2yo. Many people do it at 1 year. But I have a hard time calling a 1yo that isn't "mature" neither physically NOR mentally a "dog. Though they may STILL not be done matureing at 2, they ARE closer.

Or are you asking for the "technical" dictionary verson of then they go from a puppy to a "dog"?

Re: From a puppy to a dog

I don't consider Jesse a dog till 3 years, he will be 2 in November and I am still calling him a puppy. Small dogs are generally adults around a year, large dogs not till 3 years usually.

Re: From a puppy to a dog

My eight year old is the OLD bitch.
My four year olds are my MATURE bitches.
My three year olds are my YOUNG bitches.
My one year olds are my YEARLING bitches or Puppy Bitches
and my six week olds are my whelps.

Then I have my Dog. I have only one dog, and six puppy dogs. So when anyone asks how many dogs I have, I can honestly say, just the one.

I agree that these are no way adults at a year old. Yes, they are sexually mature, or they are capable of having babies. Humans have been known to have babies as early as nine years old, and nobody is bucking to call them adults because they are not. In fact, I really do not believe that they (dogs and bitches) are sexually mature at a year. During year two they fill out and their masculine and feminine features become more pronounced (neutering can change this).
