Is my 14wk old GSP normal or weird?

Bella is the sweetest puppy but she is afraid of everything that makes noise outside. If a car is moving it is a miracle to get her to go by it. If a plane goes over head she runs for the door. I try and take her everywhere to socialize her and she gets along with everyone but making it through the parking lots is hard.

I have been trying to have her meet other dogs and for the most part she has no fear and goes right up and sniffs but will not run around and play. She will just come back to me wanting me to rub her. Is this normal? Sometimes she acts a bit afraid but for the most part its like she is bored.

Thanks
Kristin

It could be that she is going through a fear period, although I'm not sure at 14 weeks.

(p.s. it is GSD, unless she is a German Shorthaired Pointer )

Re: Is my 14wk old GSP normal or weird?

All puppies are different, some are more scared than others, but I think that is normal for a 14 week old GSD female. This is all a new world to them they are just seeing this for the first time. All the loud noises and strange things.
I think females tend to be more nervouse than males, but in time she will adjust and get used to it all. Just keep socializing her and be patient. Some of it might be her personality that she is shy, just keep trying to show her the world. My puppy runs and hides under my deck when things scare him outside like the lawn mower, etc.
I have a Bella to and she was scared also at loud noises still is alittle bit now.

Re: Is my 14wk old GSP normal or weird?

I think your pup may have some temperament issues. My 14 wk pup is not afraid of much at all. I would do baby steps with her and not overwhelm her. Too much will backfire on her and set her back. You should research fearful dogs websites and books to help her manage. Afraid of some things may be normal, but Bella sounds like she is over her comfort threshold more often than not. You have your work cut out for you, but do not isolate your pup from things, just let her observe them from the fringe if it makes her more secure feeling. Building her confidence is the most important thing right now you can do. Limit the corrections and use happy tone of voice with her. Maybe get into a good puppy class or playtime with a confident stable dog. Do not comfort her when she runs back to you for support, just ignore her fearful behavior and redirect her focus to something else immediately. As she gets older, the fear will turn into reactive(fear aggression) behavior and this is something that is difficult to manage as she gets larger/harder to control.
My 2.5 yr old Onyx was the same way, and now as she is mature, much better. But when she was a year, it was a very difficult time for all of us. We've come a long way to manage her fear aggression.
