Should I worry about the lack of weight?

I'm a proud new owner/handler of a GSD puppy.
He's great but I think his weight and height is on the small side.
I bought the dog for work not show and the breeder said working lines grow slower than show lines. His weight is 5-6 lbs. at 8.5 weeks. Both parents are from Germany and have papers. Here are their pedigrees:

Please reply if you have experienced this with your GSD.

Re: Should I worry about the lack of weight?

Nice pedigree but wow that seems kind of small. My pup is also working line but he was 12 lbs at 8 weeks.

Re: Should I worry about the lack of weight?

My femlae pup (working lines) was from a litter of 10. She weighed 12lbs at 8 weeks. (There were 5 females in the litter, 2 were larger and 2 smaller than mine.)

Your pup may or may not end up "average" sized. There is no way to know. He IS small for his age, but that in itself doesn't mean anything as long as he is healthy.

The whole "working lines grow slower than show lines" has NOTHING to do with your pups small size.

I have a runt and she was 7 pounds at 8 weeks and is totally catching up- 12 weeks and she is around 20-but a vet check is always the first thing to do!

That's good to know, Sum. The sire was a tank and the dam was average so hopefully my dog will be an average tank.

Re: Should I worry about the lack of weight?

From looking at the pedigree it looks like your boy is part working and part German showline =)

As long as he is healthy, eating, and growing I personally wouldn't worry too much about his size.

Re: Should I worry about the lack of weight?

Our dog Buddy is the runt of his litter. We brought him home at 9 lbs at 11 weeks about a week and a half ago. We had a rough first week figuring out the best diet for him, but so far he has gained 3 pds already.

The vet says he is small but well proportioned. She thinks he will be a small male and the breeder estimates between 60 - 80 pounds. I was really worried too, but he is healthy and doing great.

Re: Should I worry about the lack of weight?

I went to the vet two days ago. She said my pup is small but would not worry about the weight just yet. My pup has had loose stool the first 5 days I had him and she thinks that could have some to do with his weight. She has me giving him a couple of different meds to help. So far they have firmed up his stool and is eating a ton. Thanks for all the info everyone!
