Sometimes it's a temporary timeout, sometimes it's permanent - either way it will say banned under the username. Generally, by the time a ban is permanent the member has already had several chances. I can only think of one time off the top of my head where a rule violation was so flagrant that it resulted in an immediate permanent ban, and that's over a 13 year period. It's possible there were others that I don't recall, but it's a very rare occurrence.
First there is at least one warning (usually several), then the person gets a temporary timeout. Anytime someone is banned from the board they know exactly why, and have had multiple opportunities to change their ways, but refuse to do so. Other board members are often not aware of all the violations because posts are edited or removed before they're seen, making it look like people have been banned over practically nothing. I assure that it's only done as a last resort, after repeated, unrepentant rule violations.
