Camera Suggestions, Please

Christmas is coming up and I am in serious need of a new camera. I have a very low budget (dogs are costly!) but it won't take much to upgrade from what I have right now.

I currently take pictures with a 4 year old Casio EX-Z110. I have no preferences as to size, zooming capabilities, video quality, size, make, etc. Just want good quality, for the price.

Budget - around $300 (don't laugh). May go up to $400, but hoping I won't have to.

I am currently stuck between the

Panasonic DMC-ZS3 (I like the intelligent Auto on this camera)

or the

Nikon P90 (now sells for around $340)

It may be just me, but from looking around, I feel the Panasonic ZS3 has better picture quality. I am aware that the P90 has better zoom and the ZS3 is more compact and easy to carry around, but neither of those factors really matter.

The camera will be, of course, for taking pictures of Trent.

Open to suggestions and preferences as to which camera is better. I never did care before what camera I had because I didn't have much to take pictures of. Well, now I do!

Re: Camera Suggestions, Please

Thanks for the suggestion - I was hoping some of the camera experts on here would see this.

I checked on an online electronics store, and found the kit sold for $629... Looks like a GREAT camera, but I'm the type of person who would easily get scammed by "good deals" I find online.

Know if I can get a D40 for $300-$400?

ETA: Wouldn't mind a used one, as long as the condition of the camera is still very good, but don't know HOW anyone could ensure that.

For online stores I use B&H Photo or Adorama, you're right there's tons of scams and grey market stuff out there.

Re: Camera Suggestions, Please

I have teh Nikon P80...while it is an ok camera...I would not say I have gotten my moneys worth with it. It takes ok pics I guess, action shots suck. Zoom is nice. I am hoping to upgrade to a Nikon DSLR this spring.

Re: Camera Suggestions, Please

Not an bad price for me, actually! I really don't need any DSLRs with extra lenses or anything like that, so considering the quality, I might go for it.

Think a complete beginner can figure out the camera reasonably well? That's my only concern with the neat fancy cameras. I'm not what you call "good with technology/electronics"

gsdlove, thanks for the info. I don't care so much for zoom, I'm good with just plain old 3x or 4x! Of course, I know the P90 has ultrazoom capabilities, but size and zoom doesn't matter to me.

Re: Camera Suggestions, Please

My Olympus needs replacing for the same reasons as gsdlove212!
When you have a puppy and all you get is blur, it is time to upgrade!
And when Lies takes the great pics she does, we all want what she has!!!!
The pics she took of my pup were so clear and sharp.
I love this shot and have it framed,
Thanks Lies!

Re: Camera Suggestions, Please

No kidding! Trent likes to pose, but he decides when enough is enough. I normally look at the screen and find that all that's there is a blur as he makes a break for it >.>

It has an AUTO setting like any point-and-shoot, no knowledge needed.
