Nails

Since Shane was 8 weeks old, I never cut his nails!

6 months ago I went to the vet to ask him to cut Shane's nails. He told me they were too short and it may hurt him. So I said ok, took Shane home.

Today, again, I went back to the vet and asked him cut Shane's nail. Again he said, he can't because Shane is very active dog and if it cuts too short it will hurt him.

Shane is 19 months old, never had his nail cuts, he is cutting in the carpet and hard wood floor just by walking. WHEN DO I CUT IT! I am thinking this doctor is either lazy or don't know what he is doing.

Someone give me any advice? Insight? How often everyone else cut their dogs nail. Thanks!

Re: Nails

We normally have the vet do Rockys nails. DH is worried he will cut them to short. Rocky gets his trimmed on every vet visit but he spends alot of time outside with us and runs on the concrete which I am told helps to file them.

Have you tried to take Shane to a groomer and see what they think?

Re: Nails

No, never been to a groomer because of Shane's dog aggression. But luckily I know a lady who is a groomer will allow me to come in after hours. I should see what she thinks.

Re: Nails

I know on both my dogs their front two nails are constantly filed away from all the activities we do, but I do have my vet cut their dew claws on the front legs as those never hit the ground to get filed down, the outer claws on their front feet never seem to get filed down either so those get cut as well. I am scared to do it myself, tried it once with my oldest GSD and I got too close, he bled for awhile. I felt horrible! And now he won't let me get close too him with a clipper, I don't blame him at all! But we took him when he was around 10 months I think...we had to help the vet hold him to cut them (he is a squirmer, the people in the waiting room thought we were killing him in there by the way he was screaming! ), my little one is only 13 weeks so I won't get them cut until she gets older.

Re: Nails

I don't trust vets or groomers to cut my dogs nails. I cut nails about once a month. The quick retracts when you cut them regularly. A little at a time at 2 or 3 day intervals will be better than too much at once. The last time I did it, I also used a dremel tool and thought the dogs would go nuts from the sound it makes but they just sat there as if I had asked them to "shake".

I don't get the vet saying it would be uncomfortable for the dog. It may be for a day or so if the nails are really short to begin with but the more often you cut small amounts, the farther back the quick retracts and eventually you can cut without worrying.
