Brushing Techniques

I have a 2-sided brush for Rhett. It's the standard metal bristles on one side and the thick black bristles on the other. I was just wondering what's the best way to use this kind of brush. Typically I use the metal bristle side first to comb through any tangles or rough spots and then finish up with the black bristle side which seems to bring out some shine and smooth it out. Is this the best way or does any one have other tips that work for bringing out a smooth shiny coat?
