Hip tests, etc.

The GSD puppy I am getting next week is coming from a first time (non "proffesional") breeder. The puppy will be 8 weeks old and has not had the hip check. When can I get this done and can it be at the vet? Also, what other physical tests are traditional with working line puppies?

Re: Hip tests, etc.

Puppy is too young. Both the mom and the dad should have their hips OFA'ed. Also, elbows and cardiac screening I would consider important for German Shepherds.
Get more info and verify scores at http://www.offa.org.
Puppies can get a preliminary screen at 6 months. You can NOT tell without a proper xray, read by someone with training and experience.

Re: Hip tests, etc.

OFA will not give a hip rating until the dog is 2, but you can have preliminary xrays done around a year. There is a test called PennHip which is also an xray and it determines probablity of hip problems based on a measurement called the distraction index.

Elbows can also have dysplasia and should be xrayed also.

There is no foolproof way of insurign your pup has no problems with hips or elbows but the best way to increase the cahnaces of good health is to buy from a breeder that has studied the pedigrees and health of the blood line. You also want to check with the breeder to make sure both parents have good xrays and hopefully the hips and elbows are clear for several generations. If the breeder can not show you this, keep looking.

Re: Hip tests, etc.

OFA prelim can also be done as early as 4 months, though most wait a bit.

Re: Hip tests, etc.

Too late. We have already purchased the puppy, named her and my wife has done gone pink crazy with leashes, collars, atc. Trust me I tried to talk her into a different color

I looked up the pedigrees and though the parents are not on the online database (but they do have papers?), all four grandparents and generations have hip checks. I guess we will just hope for the best

Re: Hip tests, etc.

AKC (American Kennel Club) papers are just a record of who the parents are. That is all. No guarantee of quality.
It is unfortunate that the sire and dam are not OFA'ed, but a good thing for your pup if all of the grandparents are.
Enjoy your new puppy, train, and have fun!!

Re: Hip tests, etc.

Okay so what is her name and where are the pictures!!!

I think your wife is awesome! Pink is my favorite color and my Kayos has a pink tracking harness and line. I bet your pup looks pretty in pink!

Even if her hips are not the best, it is not a death sentence, it is very treatable. My Kayos has a hip implant on her right side due to severe dysplasia and she does fine.

Re: Hip tests, etc.

I have posted pics in several different places on the forum so this time I will put the link to one (too many times and I may get corrected by the moderators

The resolution is horrible and the pictures are not the best but it took us forever to get her to stay still Anja is sable and her mother is black and tan and her father is a black and redish sable (his is very good looking, his small picture does not do him justice).

https://www.germanshepherds.com/forum...e=1#Post992235

When we bring her home next week I will get some better pictures out of her. Most of the pictures on here of puppies look so cute and good they look proffesional! Poor Anja had to deal with her inexperienced dad (me) trying to hold her still while my daughter snaped some pictures with her cell phone.

Oh, almost forgot. Her name is Anja Branka (means merciful protector), another one of my wife's decisions
