» Gourmet Recipes - 100% Naturally Nutritious Dog Food

100% Naturally Nutritious Dog Food
(Recipe is based around a 75 lb+ dog.)

I'd like to share with everyone what I feed my dogs daily. I got the recipe from my breeder when I first got my wonderful Zoë, I have since then modified it:

This recipe is not etched in stone, it can be modified according to your needs. Feeding your dog is just a lot of common sense; healthy food for a healthy dog is my motto. With this recipe people often comment on how beautiful my dogs are, especially their coats (they are both long-haired German Shepherds). Even my vet says they are the healthiest dogs that she’s ever seen. It’s all worth it!

(If you have any questions please e-mail me)

6-8 oz dry grain (cooked)(rice –preferably brown-, oats, etc)
½ c. yogurt
1-2 cloves fresh garlic (crushed or minced)
¼ c. fresh chopped spinach
1-2 tbsp. chopped parsley or herbs
1 ½ tsp. vegetable oil
1 tsp. cod liver oil
1 tsp. apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp. molasses
2 tbsp. honey (once a week)
1 small cooked crushed egg --with    shell (every other day)
2 tsp. brewer’s yeast
1 tbsp. raisins
1 tbsp. wheat germ
2 tbsp. wheat bran
4 oz. liver
12-15 oz. beef muscle meat (cooked chicken, turkey, may be used especially if dog is over weight)
--1½ c. cottage cheese (substitute this for the beef once a week)
*Multi Vitamin
*Vitamin C
*Bone Meal
*Sea Kelp
*Flax Seed Oil (optional)
  • Mix all ingredients in bowl and voila, that’s it!

(* follow product instructions -- I use Solid Gold Vitamins. Solid Gold provides holistic & natural products for pets. They also make a very good all-natural dog food themselves with absolutely no preservatives. Something you may want to look into if homemade is not for you. Their web site is www.solidgoldhealth.com.

You can also make big batches ahead of time & freeze it in individual portions. I find it’s just as easy to do it daily. I have my dog food ingredients in one drawer in my kitchen, along with the measuring utensils, that way everything is easily accessible and it has just become a quick routine. I also use rice quite often and with a rice cooker it takes no thought at all and you can make a few days worth of rice at a time.

Note:

  • To add variety to my dog’s dinner instead of always using the same ingredients, and also to make it a little lighter, sometimes I use cooked potatoes, carrots & onions in place of the grain.
  • When I use chicken or turkey I make a big pot of stock from the bones that can be added to their food as additional flavoring (it can be frozen in individual packed which are thawed out as needed)
  • If using beef you can get good prices on large amounts by going to a private farm or private butcher rather than the supermarket.
  • If shopping at a supermarket, and in large quantities, ask the butcher for a price discount on unprocessed meat ends (that’s the part they end up making into hamburger) they will usually discount the cost because it takes a lot of time and effort for them to grind it, weight it, package it and get it out on the shelves for their regular customers. Also a high percentage of fat in the meat is a good thing.

"This may seem like it is alot of work but I assure you it is not. I spend maybe 10 minutes per evening feeding my two GSDs...time well spent!"
