***vBulletin Conversion Test Site***
Good day everyone,
The germanshepherds.com test environment is now set ready for everyone to take for a spin.
PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST BEFORE DOING ANYTHING.
Things to take note of ON THE TEST SITE:
1. Whatever data you see on the test site is at least TEN DAYS OLD. In producing the database for the test environment, our team started working on it a few weeks ago and took a sample of data from this site 10 days ago. That means if you registered after this period, your user information will not be on the test site. Posts, PMs, picture uploads... basically any action made on this site after the sample date WILL NOT BE on the test environment.
2. You are allowed to make whatever changes you want on the test site, make posts, try out the features... anything your permissions allow for you to get use to the site. HOWEVER.... HOWEVER... HOWEVER... changes made on the test site WILL NOT..NOT NOT NOT.. reflect on the live site when that goes up.
3. The tentative schedule for the live site to be released is Wednesday February 10th around noon. Continue to use GSD until you see a maintenance warning when you try to access the site. This means we're doing the live conversion. It takes a few hours to transfer everything over. All activity PRIOR to this maintenance warning going up WILL BE converted to the new site.
4. Make sure to back up any important private messages you do not want to lose. The private messaging system in vBulletin is a little different than it is here.
On the current GSD, the PM system works like any thread you post in the forums. So you could technically have a thread of private messages with another user containing hundreds of messages you have sent to each other but it would only count as ONE PM.
On vBulletin, EVERY message you receive counts as ONE private message. On the test site and on the live site, everyone's PM storage has been increased to 1500 messages. It will be that way for the first month and then we will reduce it to a number that the mods/admins are still discussing.
Bottom line, if you have anything important that you're afraid might get cut off due to going over your max storage space, copy and save it in a text file.
5. We've already covered this but as a reminder:
On vBulletin, your profile will always show the username you created in your original registration. This is different from what is allowed on the current software. WE can change this for you AFTER the conversion to any username you want. Remember: Your username will be the name you log in with and will be the name that shows up for EVERYONE to see.
6. Your existing buddy lists will need to be converted and the new software will not do this automatically. I'm not familiar with how the buddy lists work on this platform but when we go live (and even in the test environment), your buddy list (or contact list) will be empty. If you're concerned about this, please start writing down the names of your buddies or you can always just wait til the conversion is over and re-buddy them. Keep in mind about how the username thing works because I'm guessing some of you have buddies and you only know them by their DISPLAY name. If you try finding them on the converted site with the display name, your search will come up blank.
7. I will create a new thread in this site for feedback. Please post feedback in there only. DO NOT POST QUESTIONS about how things work on the test site in the feedback thread. It will be ignored.
9. DO NOT post your questions about the vBulletin site in the test environment. Please post the questions HERE in this newly created forum area. Also, it is best to create your own thread instead of jumping into someone's thread if you have a question unrelated to the original question. This ensures a higher chance of us not missing your question.
Also, for everyone's sake, please be specific in your thread titles if you have questions. This helps all of us and saves other users from asking the same question.
10. We are all aware that this is going to be a change on different levels for different users. You're more than welcome to express your feedback but please do it as civil as possible. You will find that vBulletin for the most part does what you can do here. I'm told by the mods/admins who have tested the site and have used this current platform extensively that there will be some features missing. I apologize for that in advance. Have an open mind and know that we wouldn't be going through all the hassle of changing the site platform if we felt the current one would be up to snuff down the road.
Without further waiting.......
