how to teach "play"
We rescued a 4 year old GSD female, now named Ginger. She doesn't seem to know how to play with toys. no interest in balls, ropes, soft toys, nothing. She does seem to know how to play with other dogs.

After some health issues, our rehab therapist wants us to try to teach her to play.
Any suggestions?

My first dog was a 8 year old rescue with the same problem, absolutely no interest in any of the toys offered. I ended up taking him to Petsmart and showing him pretty much every single toy available and it turned out he had a good interest in tennis balls. As soon as I bounced it he pounced and chased it around so I bought a few

Firstly and most important - let the dog settle into the house. Keep expectations, even asking her to play minimal for a few weeks. Take her to the store and offer her a variety of toys and see if she shows any interest. If she doesn't then leave and try again in another few weeks there's no rush :)

Some dogs just don't care. I have an 8 year old rescue who has played with toys less times than I can count on my fingers. He does love playing with other dogs and he loves interacting with people (walks, petting, etc), just not tugging or fetching. He's also low drive and quite lazy so we've never really pushed it.

We've had her about 2 months. And she is finally starting to play with me.
The therapist really wants us to try to teach her. Maybe I'll take her to the store...she chose her own treats...why not toys :)
