Default No enthusiasm when searching for articles

I am a total novice GSD owner (have done TV and film work with previous dogs so not new to dogs), and decided to play about with doing scent work with my 18mth GSD bitch. She's incredibly ball obsessed and I used to hide her favourite ball and she would go crazy sniffing it out. I've been trying to get her to move on to sniffing out my car keys and indicating rather than picking them up and using the ball as a reward. She's done really well and paws then sits next to the keys when she finds them but she's pretty unenthusiastic about it. No where near as excited as she used to get when searching for her ball. Have I messed up in the training and if so how can I fix it?

Probably never threw your keys around outside and had your pup fetch them and play with them and associate them with good times.....like her favourite ball.

Just a knee-jerk response....

Actually I have, not the fetch part but the throwing around and playing with them I have. It was how I thought I could build the association.
Keys=play=ball.
She engaged in play with them and chased them when I threw them.

How quickly and vigorously do you reward her when she sits for the keys?

I try instantly but now you've said that there's sometimes a delay if the ball gets stuck in my pocket. I've just finished a short session with her and I don't think I'm being too enthusiastic when she finds them, I was quicker and more encouraging this time and she was loads better.

She paws them when she finds them but I would like her to sit to indicate when she's found them. She does it automatically some of the time. Should I just stick to getting her to find them and work on her sitting further down the line?
