Training video.. critique..

Alright.. first time ever making a video.. annnd this wasn't our best session. While trained already. We are introducing marking for new behaviors... so this is me attempting to mark with "yes" I feel like I'm all kinds of messed up and thought I would get opinions... no judgment and be constructive please! :) I'm just trying to learn what I could improve on as a handler. Oh and just if you pay attention... yes I said bring me your ball, and he brought his frisbee.. to him.. ball is toy... any toy. LOL. :wild:

P.S. also new to posting on videos that are not on FB :p let me know if you can't see the video I will try again..

Oh and apologies for going out of view and also.. the new commands we are working on are "stand" "go around" and "af" (his new down command where he downs front to back, vs back to front).

He's attentive to you and listens well.
He seems super excited about the frisbee, why not train with that as a reward so things are a little more exciting? He does look like he enjoys the food though, nice

I have done both.. we switch it up.. today was food, just because it was a quick decision to grab a handful and make the video. I wasn't going to post the video.. only because I am super self conscious when it comes to training.. I don't feel I'm the best, but I sent it to someone else and figured what the heck, lol.

So in short.. he does train with that too, lol. He lives for it, which is why i like to switch it up.

Bad mom award goes to me... when after I cut the video I threw on top of that shed in the video and can't get it down

Nice obedient dog. Only thing I'll say is try not to drop treats. Him having to take time to find it just takes his attention away from you for no reason.

Also your energy could be better so that the dog is excited and it's less of the dog just going through the motions. At the end when you were done you got more upbeat and the dog also got more excited. Dog should be excited all throughout the obedience training.

Nah I'm just a little jealous your dog has enough food drive to train outside. My dog? forget it unless we're in the boring living room lol. I prefer toys though. I'm also too self conscious to post vids to the public here, you guys did a good job though.

PS I know that feeling!!! We got her tug stuck in a tree last week. My bf and I found a belt in the house, some how built some contraption of a mop and a broom stuck together with a hanger attached to the end as a hook..then we stood on a table and fished it out of the tree lol :D some crazy 10 foot pole thing

Boomer11: Valid point. I think that was me knowing I was being videoed, lol. Sorry.

Also, may be fun to show training with his frisbee or ball... it is MUCH different energy.

My first thought was OH my BF can get that.. then realized he is on a business trip for a few.. he will have to wait.

And oddly enough.. he only recently go food motivated.. he has always been a tough guy with treats.. picky picky picky! lol

You guys are having fun together! It looks like you have a good relationship :)

I would recommend being much more animated in training. Make each reward a little event and keep him spun up and having fun. I tend to think of it like a play session, energy wise, with some OB training mixed in. When you mark a behavior, think BANG in your head and explode with some energy, always after the mark though. You can use the food like a toy by making it move and it will make the reward value greater.

When luring the AF, I would give the verbal separately from the lure. If you do the two at the same time it will take him much longer to fade the lure. Say AF, wait a half second, then lure. This also gives you a window to let him respond without the lure. As long as the lure comes within a second of the command, he will pair them.

If he knows DOWN, and you are trying to add AF, just say AF before DOWN through lots of reps and then remove the DOWN. He will learn that AF precedes DOWN and will begin to respond to the Dutch command before the english.

Good tip from Boomer about not dropping food. It takes the steam out of the training session while the dog hunts around for it.

Here's a great video from Baillif showing a short OB session.

Haha now I feel the need to post a better video where I'm more excited with him.. usually we are at least a BIT more animated, just got home and wanted to get the video done while I had the motivation and it was about to start raining.. not good for the laptop, lol... we're not to Baillifs level yet but.. I PROMISE we have more fun, LOL.. it's also much more exciting with his toy.. LOVES that frisbee. I may start incorporating that more than I do already.

Thank you for the great tips.. I really appreciate it. Gives me at least a little more confidence that I'm in the right direction.

So funny how someone can be so confident in one area of their life and less so in another
