"Loading" words

Hello. When I got our girl, Agnes, I found Michael Ellis, thanks to this site. I am now watching his "How to train a dog with food" dvd, and have a question. He says the first step is to "load" your words, ie: yes, good, no. Simple enough...just wondering how long this process takes?

And can you do luring, and other engagement exercises at the same time?

If this is not posted in the right place, please let me know.

Oh, yes,....can I also use this training method on a two year old dog that is trained, (almost has a cd, a rally title, etc) yet so food motivated that it;s hard to get him to stay focused and engaged without food? I am thinking that if I load the yes, good, no with him (wish I had found Ellis long ago!), that that would help him along with engagement training/exercises.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jamie

I don't think there's a set amount of time for loading the words. I think I spent a couple minutes on it- food motivated dog should learn quickly. Other people load the markers before each training session when they're just starting off.

Yes, you can do all those other training techniques with marker words.

If your dog is too focused on food for luring, you can teach them to target the palm of your hand or even the end of a stick and use that to lure them into position, then mark and reward. It's easy to teach- hold out your hand and when the dog sniffs it, mark and reward. Increase distance and movement of hand gradually until they naturally follow it.
