Prey Drive

So I've been working with a basic obedience trainer here, and he (Daniel) says that there are no PP trainers near me, but gave me some things to begin training for his prey drive. I use a rope you with a ball knotted on the end and that is what I use to build his prey drive. My GSD is trained in German and has really stepped up his game since I got him. He is 7 months but only 55lbs. My question is: is this a proper prey drive building exercise? Are there any others I could do? What would you guys recommend?

Tug - but be sure to let him win after a struggle of course. I use 2 tugs attached to 6ft leashes - my Sting waits on the down/stay - I walk out about 20 ft. holding both - when I lower my arm he charges right at the tug that I am scooting on the ground - when he grabs that - and bites - I pull then I quick drop and pick up the other one and so it goes. Act like prey and even growl - pretend you are both fighting over dinner That will make your dog bite down harder (wear thick gloves just in case ) - then after about 10 minutes or so really dig in - and when your dog is biting and pulling - release the tug - and walk away "defeated" - slouch your shoulders - then turn and praise your dog - now my Sting likes to take a "victory lap" with both tugs in his mouth - he then brings them to me and after he releases them - I give him a treat and a good rub down which he loves.

Does he need to drive building? Are you wanting to build drive for obedience, for schutzhund or just because you want him to play more?

For either PP or Schutzhund. I haven't had him evaluated to see which would be more suitable for him.

I think you should get your dog evaluated, figure out what you need/want from your dog, and go towards that. As a novice handler you really don't want to be doing anything that's not working towards a final goal with the help of an instructor that has been there before.

Especially with something like PP or Schutzhund you really want to have someone that can tell you objectively if the dog is progressing or not.

Well I've looked into it, and there are no certified trainers here near me.

Well considering there is no such thng that I know of of getting "certified" in training PP or SchH, that could be why you can't find one...although you do live in the middle of nowhere.

There looks to be one USCA club in the state of Utah. I would contact them and even if they do not meet anywhere near you they may know of groups that train in your area.

USA - Northwest Region Clubs

And the website for your region:
