Rehome in Heat

Our family recently adopted a 7 year old retired breeding female (11/03/12.) She has exceptional DDR bloodlines, super sweet and very social. The day we picked her up she came into heat. Not ideal, but we will get through it. She will be spayed in a couple of months.

She is adjusting well and loves all the attention. We are doing our best to keep the stress level to a minimum. The only problem that has shown itself is that she is terrified of other dogs- I avoid them anyway because of her cycle, but even if they are far away and can smell them, she really panics. Does anyone have any ideas about this? I know females can be wacky during this time, but this struck me as very strange. Also, if anyone has input about getting her adjusted to her new life, please feel free to comment.

Have you talked with the breeder about her personality? I would wait til she gets thru this heat cycle to see who she really is, like you say, they can be wacky during this time.
