I was wondering if anyone else does any night training (outside where is pretty dark, like maybe under just ordinary street lights).
I do some training in the cul-de-sac under a streetlight or two outside my house and I do notice some changes in his behavior (male 4yo GSD) - he is much more alert and noticing things and people around us. And i should mention that he is an extremly alert dog anywhere and any time so this is a noticeable uptick in his alertness. Which of course makes it somewhat more difficult to get and keep his attention. So I am looking for feedback from others. And also maybe some thoughts about - Would you expect your dog to obey equally at night? How about in true darkness? |

This is interesting. Havoc is much more alert to his surroundings if I walk him at dusk--especially if I'm walking him alone. He seems more suspicious of people but I live in a urban area with homeless, crackheads and surly teens. I think that he picks up on my heightened awareness. I'm looking forward to longer days.

We train at night and just before dark for part of the year. Have trained under headlights before. I haven't done much obedience type training in the dark, but have done protection. The dark does put the dogs a bit more on edge just like it tends to do to people I have also been out tracking just before it is too dark to see.
Yes, I expect my dogs to obey.
