I think tonight I'll go home and ask Hondo if he thinks he's spoiled.....right after he's finished doing my taxes.....

IMHO-- dogs (and kids) who are well-trained are a joy to spoil. If you have a dog who is well-behaved and well-trained, its a true pleasure to take him places, buy him toys, snuggle with him on the people bed. Similarly, one of my friends has an 8 year old daughter who is polite, appreciative, and respectful. I LOVE to "borrow" her and take her to the zoo and the museum and to do other fun stuff. Why don't I do that with other friends's kids? They're not well-trained.

If someone said to me, "Your Dog is spoiled", after what you describe, I would smile and say, "Yep". I don't care what others think of my girls. They are well behaved most of the time and goofy at others, but my Lovely Bride and I am Ok with it.

I spoil my dogs and I don't give a fig if that bothers people. They are well behaved, and they are richly rewarded for it.
We do the same thing with the crates at bedtime. They get a bedtime snack every single night. Don gives it to them, he even lets them help pick out which kind of treat they want. They are DESPERATE to go in their crates at bedtime.

I would say Ozzy is both. However, if he wasn't reliably trained, he wouldn't be spoiled. In a sense, he has earned his right to be spoiled.

My puppy is told to go to the kennel and given a treat after it is closed. Now he goes on command.
![]() So no I don't think it is spoiling to give them treats. You are just teaching them that what they did was good.

I also give a treat when he goes in his crate. I have him crated at my parent's while I work so he spends a fair amount of time there during the day(with breaks) and I want him to associate it with something good. Now, as soon as we walk in the door he runs to his crate and lays down. I don't mind, I think it's great that he's so willing.
