Just think of the beginning obedience classes that everyone recommends as something fun to do with Knuckles. I used to think that classes would be boring and had no interest in formal training. Then I found out that classes are FUN, and the more I did, the more my interests in continuing training grew. I used to say "I have a mutt from the pound, it's not like I'll ever do any formal training and competitions with her, so who cares about classes?" That was the old me. Sure changed my mind on that since, and even a mutt from the pound can earn titles and certificates.

I liked the STAR puppy class because 1) it was great socialization for Saber and good bonding time for us, and 2) I have never taught a dog to do anything before. If you have trained dogs before and have friends/pups to play with your pup, maybe the STAR is a waste, but for me it was a great experience and I learned a lot.

The CGC is very simple in some ways, but if your dog needs to learn basic manners and you want your dog to listen to you, and you have not trained dogs before, it is something you can work towards. It really isn't a 'gimme'... I know several people who have gone through CGC and OB classes mroe than once andare still unable to pass, and I have to give them credit for continuing to work with their dog and not giving up. We see a lot of that in our club.

So, while folks who have trained dogs and/or do Schutzhund or advanced obedience etc might see the basic classes as a waste, I have to say in my own experience I have seen many owners become more responsible pet owners and bond with their dogs (and lose some of the frustration they had with them) by taking STAR, Home Companion, and CGC classes. I do recommend them.

Thanks everyone for your input. I guess I'll just hold out and see what happens. I'll start him with the puppy classes and go from there. I've never taken any dog to any type of classes, I've always just worked with them myself.
I could see myself being one of those people who spends every waking moment training with my dogs and I know my husband can see it too! He does like to brag on how much time I spend with the dogs working with them... we do get compliments on how behaved & trained they are (past dogs also), but I think it could become an addiction for me!

Default Pup Training

Spend time with the pup one on one.
Teach the pup to focus on you for guidance (commands).
Socialization is good, variety in daily experiences may be better for the pup though.

Scarlett was two years old when we rescued her. She had only the most basic obedience down. We did Basic Obedience and Sub Novice Obedience with her and that was some of the best money we could have spent. Having a LARGE, unruly dog is unpleasant for everyone. We let our youngest child be the handler during the classes (at 4' 11" she needs to handle Scarlett too). We all practiced (I think WE are the ones who got trained)...NOW, we have our CGC and are onto possibly Therapy Dog work.

Definitely invest in at least the most basic obedience class. EVERYONE who comes into your home, you meet on the street or encounter at the vet will appreciate it. In the end, you will emjoy your dog SO much more when you know you can control his/her behaviour.

We've all met poorly behaved, out of control dogs and not enjoyed their company. What a disservice to the dog. A little obedience training goes a long way!

Enjoy your pup. We LOVE pictures around here!
