Is it to late to train my lab to go bird hunting? she is a little over 2 and is very hyper and eager to learn and loves to be taught new tricks. Im just not sure how to go about teaching her to hunt birds..

Maybe join a lab forum or a hunting dog forum. There are field dogs and show dogs in labs. If they are anything like English Setters, both lines can hunt, but the field dogs are much better at it.

Absolutely not to late! I'd suggest Evan Graham's "Smart Works" or "Smart Fetch" if you're serious. "10 Minute Retriever" by the Dahls is a good place to start for an average hunting dog. What type of bird do you want to hunt.
I'd love to have our GSD hunt! |

You are right about that, I am also on a lab forum but very rarely go there either, not very active at all.

hi -- here is the web site of a woman who is very serious about her Labs. She breeds and raises them for police work, she trials them , the whole 9 yards.
She puts her work into the dogs , not web sites ! www.trailrunners.ca You can contact her and she can help you out. Carmen Carmspack Working German Shepherd Dogs |

I would loook for a Hunting kennel near you and give them a call so they can evaluate your dog.
Just like GSDs hyperactivity does not equal drive. I have a Lab from a hunting breeder and before I got her alot of her hunt work had been started, so the plan is to finish that now that she is Certified in SAR. She really loves that type of work as well. I will not go back to the breeder (she lives too far away) but have found another kennel closer to where I live. Not all Labs are good hunting dogs, just like not all GSDs make good police dogs. |
