A dog has to be trained to walk beside or behind you. Otherwise they'll always walk ahead because they walk faster than we do naturally and-- let's face it-- the walk is the most exciting part of their day.

Thank you! I walk my dogs almost every day in the winter, in the summer, I bike with them.
I bike as much as possible (in MN) because I have bad knees and I just can't walk as fast as I'd like to. I let Gunnar and Cass walk in front of me a lot of the time. I even had a saddlemaker I know make me four, 12 foot leads so they can even walk farther in front of me. If we see someone coming toward us, I put them in a heel and we do just fine. When they pass, I tell them to "lead" and they go back in front of me.
I guess every time they don't listen to me, I should "tap" them with my foot to get their attention.

I get so crazy with people that watch 2 episodes of his show and then think you have to be some tyrannical leader and not allow your dogs look like they're having fun.

I've heard good things about the Menlo Park club, if you're interested in trying Schutzhund that's probably a good place to start.
