How to turn her ball drive into the reward in training?

well, I tried to make a ball on a string from what I had at home to try it and she liked it. but she kept grabbing the robe instead of the ball, so i showed her that I wanted her to grab the ball and then she started getting it.
it didnt have the same effect on her as the orange chuck-it ball (focus wise) but there is definitely potential there.
