Never too late! You can teach new commands to a dog at any age. I teach the hand signal by doing it repeatedly while speaking the English command. Once my dog knows the signals, I teach the command in several languages by doing the signal while saying the new language commands. My older dog knows quite a few commands and words in American sign language, traditional canine hand signals, German, French, and English.

I taught my 9 yr old GSD the French commands just for fun. She had no problems picking it up.

The only thing I don't like about german is "sitz" and "steh" both starting with "s". I like French "Debout" better for stand (and it's more fun to say!)
