Today I taught my 5 month pup speak at the park!! He was very attentive and learned super quick. The reason I'm teaching him speak is so I can teach him how to be quiet also because he crazy barking habit but teaching speak on command is so rewarding!
I've heard of people teaching to Speak on command so that they can later teach No Speak. That doesn't work for me. But teaching speak does have a few good uses. We sometimes have out dogs bark a goodbye if a child stops to visit, especially if they are not sure of the dog. It is a friendly bark and it often brings a smile. We also used the command to teach our boy to bark at the Decoy / Helper in protection games.
When you charming little pup gets bigger perhaps you can teach "whisper" and "count".
Growing up we had a male GSD who would bark. He loved his tennis balls and we taught him to whisper for the ball. He got to the point that he would sit and wait for someone to throw the ball to him and would have a puff of air come out from his lips.
