Trained puppy hand-off
Our pre-trained puppy will arrive in 4-6 months (she's 9 weeks old now). Has anyone decided to go the pre-trained route? If so, can you offer any experiences/comments/concerns? Was the puppy trained to your expectations? Was bringing home a 6-8 month old GSD intimidating?
I am extremely concerned about the hand-off from the trainer to me. Will I be able to easily ruin the training if not careful? Will the dog even listen to me? The breeder/trainer has assured me that it would not be a problem but I would love to hear some personal experiences from fellow GSD owners.
I've never heard of that over here, but have you met any of the other dogs that this person has trained? What made you decide to go down that track as opposed to training it yourself?
6-8 months is so old, it will just be a case of making sure the dog knows you are the new owner now. Bit of positive re-inforcement with commands and feeding etc I don't see why you would have any issues but interested to hear how it goes!
I had my sights set on a puppy. I have wanted a GSD forever ( I am now in my fifties) and was waiting to retire before I got one. Well, retirement still seems many years away and I'm not getting any younger so I decided that I was not going to wait. But both my wife and I work 9 to 5 and the puppy would be home all alone for 9 hours a day during the most important period of their lives. This didn't sit well with me. I wanted a dog that is obedient and was safe to have around our 2 cats and our 2 year-old grand-daughter. I also wanted the dog to have the best possible life I could give it; not only by providing shelter, food, affection and companionship but also by allowing it to become a stable, confident, courageous dog. I didn't think that the dog would reach it's potential by leaving it alone all day during the very important 2 to 6 month stage. I was very conflicted and almost gave up on the idea.
I did some research and found breeders that sold pre-trained puppies. I did more research, asked lots of questions and decided to visit a recommended breeder. I was able to see and interact with the mother and father and was impressed by how well behaved they were. I met the puppies and together we selected a possible candidate. We discussed the pre-trained puppy approach and what type of training/socialization would be done, and of course the cost. I was pleased with the training agenda and a little surprised with the cost. I was also very concerned with the puppy hand-off, but was told that I would be given a video of the training plus some individual training classes, all included in the cost, to help with the hand-off. This made me feel more comfortable, but was still unsure how a 6 month-old puppy would bond to me after being trained/handled by someone else for the first months of its life. What finally set my mind at ease was the fact that the breeder trained dogs for the local Police department and explained to me that the cop/dog bond is as tight as it gets and that the cop doesn't get his dog until much later in life.
Made much sense to me. Puppy (dog) arrives in December.
when you think about it, rescue dogs who come from Who-knows-where and are who-knows-how-old bond with families when given love, food and a comfy safe place to sleep. I don't see how this would be much different.
That being said, we got our pup at 8 weeks and now our pup is 8 months old and still a handful. We also decided to get him while we are in our 50s instead of waiting until we were retired. I'm home all day so that helps and we go to Schutzhund practice on the weekends. We get a great deal of good advice there.
