Board and Train for 6 month old puppy
Not sure if this is the right forum - but I'm interested in getting other people's thoughts on this.
We got a puppy about a month ago and have started training at home. Also, have started doing a once weekly puppy obedience class with a local Schutzhund club. I like training and plan to continue doing basic obedience training, hopefully put a BH on my dog and maybe continue doing Schutzhund beyond a basic BH.
This October we are planning to take a two week trip. Our puppy will be about 6 months old. I have a local kennel I can put him in (which I've liked and used before), or I can send him to the breeder, who is also an experienced trainer, has both the puppy's parents on the premises and does have a board and train program.
On the one hand, I do have confidence in this guy as a breeder and a trainer and like the idea that my puppy won't spend the two weeks we're gone just sitting in a kennel. Plus, if he's starting to develop bad habits, maybe the breeder could take some time addressing them.
On the other hand, I have a certain training program I'm following and I don't want to confuse my dog by having him trained by someone whose approach might be different. And I'm not really looking for someone to do basic training with my dog - I view that as my responsibility. Finally, even though I have confidence in the breeder I bought the puppy from, in the back of my mind there is a concern about someone other than me handling/training my dog - particularly when I'm not there to see what's being done.
Interested if others think this is a good idea? A bad idea? A waste of money? (The board and train program will obviously cost more than a simple kennel stay).
For me, if it was just 2 weeks and your pup had to be boarded, I'd probably just board them and not worry about the training except if it was just general fun stuff that got the puppy out of the kennel area for some one on one and play...
Truthfully, instead of kenneling my dogs, I use my friends. You know, my friends with dogs? The ones that ALSO go on vacation and need THEIR dogs taken care of too?
So instead of kenneling at all, they are at my friends homes (that my pup knows) with their dogs (that my pup knows ) and frankly end up having a blast. And guess what happens when my friend goes on vacation? They get to have ME as their dogsitter!!! If you are already in dog classes you should ask around in your dog class! I'm sure you've been out on walks/hikes/socialization with classmates so know which ones would work best.
Here's my Osin from last weekend at my friends home. Had a BLAST with their yellow Lab and didn't stop playing for the 4 days I was gone! And I get that pretty yellow Lab at my house in a few weeks when they are off on their summer holiday.
MRL - don't disagree about staying with trusted friends being the best solution. Just not sure I know anyone well enough to ask at this point. Just started working with the schutzhund club, so it would be a little presumptuous to ask them to take on a rambunctous puppy for two weeks. My wife has a good friend with dogs who she had helped take care of when her husband was ill. But they're little lap dogs. No way she could handle our GSD. So it's either a kennel or board and train.
I'm going to keep thinking about it.
Can your dog be boarded at your breeder's house, without any training involved? Is it a strictly kennel situation, with no free time out in a yard to explore and play? I'd choose what ever option gives your puppy more time to just be a puppy, and have fun.
My dogs go to my breeder's house when I need someone to watch them. No training, just hanging out in the country. My dogs think it's a vacation for them when they go out there (and frankly, I have a hard time getting Carly to come home). 100' long dirt and sand kennel runs under the trees (with a kiddie pool) for part of the day, then play time in the enormous yard (more kiddie pools). Walks in the woods. Sleep in a crate inside in the dog room. Russell also gets to play with his litter sister, which is nice. I know I'm lucky to have that option. I've also gone out to my breeders house and taken care of her dogs (and chickens) when she's gone on vacation.
