Default How to teach a puppy to only do something on command

I taught my 6 month old puppy to use a rope to open the fridge. He is very good at doing it when I ask him to. But now the problem is he opens it all the time haha. Ill come in the kitchen and its open and hes looking around in there. How do I teach him to only do it when I ask him to.

You've made it a fun game but the behavior is not under stimulus control.

Sit by the refrigerator and only reward him for doing it when you ask. Ignore him when he does it on his own.

Ignoring him when he does it on his own when there is food in there is probably not the best idea...

I meant while training. Give cue, reward for doing it. Wait. If he offers behavior, ignore. Close door, give cue. Reward. Wait. Ignore offered openings.

As for when your not home either take the tie off the door or block access to kitchen or do both.

Yeah It was kind of cute and funny at first but its not something he can do all the time. And I do take the rope off when we aren't home.
