Default New German Shepherd owner.

Hello,

I recently just got a German Shepherd(3 y/o female.) She is very sweet but is still trying to get accustom to her new surrounding. I want to start training her to walk better on a leash and give some basic obedience training. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Welcome! Reading through the posts here will give you good tips on training. In the meanwhile if you are aiming for heeling in position, you have to practice, practice, practice. Every time the dog surges ahead, stop and become a tree. Practice with a treat in your hand so the dog has something it is willing to work for. A lot of people use hot dogs because the dog can get several bites. I use freeze dried buffalo for training treats. What ever makes your dog turn on, toys, treats, kind words, etc will be what you need to use to train. Every dog is different on what is best. Try different things and see what you get the best reaction to. Raina always wanted to forge ahead instead of staying in heeling position in the beginning - that's when I learned to become a tree. Every time she gets too far forward I would stop completely, making her come back around into position before moving forward again. Now she can heel off lead through a rally course. I'm still working on competing with her at the advanced level due to a lack of funds but I still work her at home. Never stop training is the best advice I can give. Every situation can be used to train stuff. Good luck and keep coming back - with pictures if possible.
