another crate question

How many hours a day should my puppy stay crated. Is it ok to let him roam around the house? Do you only allow a certain amount of time out the crate at one time whether in the house or outside?

No more than 1 hour more than his age in months. 2 months old, 3 hours in crate.

If they are loose, I would have them tethered to you. Can't be out of your sight.

Definitely tether to you when little. It helps with potty training to catch them in the act and reinforce going potty outside. Crate is great but again at least let young ones out every 4 hours.
A good tip is a quiet puppy is NEVER a good thing!!

When I bring him out to go potty should I put him in soon after he's done or let him roam around outside for a few mins?

I was careful to be clear about things. Pup out of crate, go potty, get praise!!! Then back inside for fun times. Pup does not potty outside, back in crate for 10 minutes and try again.

If you want to play outside, I would make a clear differentiation. Outside, potty. Back inside for a few minutes, then outside(to a different area) to play. If possible, in the beginning, play out front, potty in the back (hehe like a mullet). Do not confuse potty area with play area.

Did something very similar with Titan and it worked pretty well. I leashed him when we went out to potty. I used a command "go potty." If he went he got praise and off leash for play time. If he didn't, back inside, in crate. Repeat. he knew he had to potty to play. It also came in handy for road trips. A lot of dogs I know, and have owned, wouldn't potty on command or go while you had them on lead. That is no issue for this guy.

Ok. I was playing with him where he potties at. Thanks for letting me know. Quick question, when praising your pup for potty do you click and treat as soon as he starts to potty or wait until he finishes?

Me personally, the second he starts doing his business I mark it with a "potty!" In a happy tone. Then he gets a treat. I want them to understand the word potty. Makes life easier when it's 2degrees out and you don't want to fiddle around.

So my wife has the day off and she is letting our puppy stay out of the crate because he has pottied outside and she sais he isn't leaving her side and being really good. Should the puppy still be crated? Or it is ok for him to be outside of his crate for a couple hours straight.
