Countersurfing

Help! I've never had a dog that counter-surfed before. I've caught Odin mid-act a couple of times now, front paws on the kitchen counter or on the table.

Tips on breaking this behavior? If he's in the house unsupervised he's in the crate, but he's started to be sneaky and now and then is in the kitchen when no one else is and no one knows he's in there.

Is there anything that people have tried that worked? It's not even food so much, he likes dish towels (runs like a mad fiend when he gets them) and potholders, purses (off the table), shoes (we started putting some of the shoes up on chairs because he's started chewing on shoes if we don't put them up). And anything else he can get. Yeah, I'm sure he'll get into food too if it's in reach, but he does it for stuff besides food.

Oh he has..he's exhausting...it's "no Odin, No Odin, NO ODIN!" all evening some evenings...time out in the crate, then some ball chasing, obedience training and he's right back to his naughty behavior.

He's doing well with obedience training and "leaves it" when we say "Leave it!", but he is a BUSY dog.

Take comfort in the fact you have one smart cookie, :) and maybe throw down game for him?

My almost 9 month old golden does this. He loves my phone, he even gently takes it off the charger. He brings it to me all the time. Mine generally brings me his finds. He did eat my sunglasses a couple days ago. He also trades his ball for items..he'll take something and leave his ball in its place. For example in the picture I attached he took a can of cat food and left his ball...

My blind GSD did this -- he followed his nose up to the counter to steal anything that interests him. He was sneaky about it, like yours, so we rarely caught him in the act. We fixed it by spreading red pepper flakes on the counter tops for a few days (cayenne would work too). It's a little messy for a few days, but it does tend to fix the behavior.

Half a Burger's Just Fine With Me...

My Zeus at 12 weeks was already about 2.5 ft. long and very, well, HUNGRY.

I made a hamburger and left if momentarily on the kitchen counter to run to the fridge for some condiments only to return to find the burger on the floor half eaten with a very guilty looking pup licking his chops.

I scolder him. Picked up the burger. Dusted it off and ate the rest with a squeal of delight which scared him to death. He ran until the walls stopped him.

No more c-surfing has been observed.

Stormie is 4 months old and she loves to jump on the counter. She hasn't taken anything off of it yet, but she sniffs around. I tell her "off" and give her treats when she sits on the floor instead of jumping. She still jumps on the counter, but I think it helps her to think about what is most likely to get her a treat.
