Beau is 18 months old. If I can't watch him, he is in the crate. Most of my other dogs were 6-9 months when I could trust them unsupervised when I was at home.

I would definitely wait until your puppy is completed with the chewing stage (at least the one where the teeth are all coming in)

your dog, your training and timing will let you
know when you can leave the door open to the
crate. when you leave the door open to the crate
are you giving your dog run of the house?

when my dog was a pup he was in a crate that could house
a full grown Great Dane. i never used a divider and the only
time he soiled his crate was when he was sick and that was
my fault for leaving him in his crate to long.

Just open it up a bit each day and see how he does. If he has an accident, move it back.

Your ? is relating opening the crate to the dog making accidents? There is no relation. The dog will not go potty in the crate, but that association doesnt apply to the rest of your house. So be diligent watching the dog and if it starts going then its back to the crate. Every mistake the dog makes in the house sets you back 3 steps so be on top of her.

We started out with half the crate when we brought Howie home. At about 4 months old we removed the divider completely and haven't had an issue.
