I'm getting a german shepherd puppy. But how do I potty train him? I don't want him to relieve himself in the house. How often should I take him out to pee/poop? How long will it take for him to learn? How did you train your puppy? Should I allow him to sleep on my bed or a crate?thanks

Will your puppy be 8 weeks old when you get it? In my suggestion I'm going to make that assumption.
With a brand new puppy I would recommend setting up a small area where you can be with the puppy and watch them at all times. Start by taking the pup out right away to do business after a nap, play time and feedings. Outside of that, take your pup out every half hour. Stay outside with the pup until it does its business. When it does business, praise them! Let them know how happy you are. If you cannot be dedicated to watching your pup, I would recommend crating. Most pups will not go where they sleep. As for sleeping at night, I'd recommend crate training. We kept our pups crate in our room with us for the first few weeks and set out alarm to get up every 3 hours to take him out to do business. Now that our pup is 9 months old and makes it through the night, he isn't crated at night anymore. Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App |

At around 8 wks, I took my boy out about every 20 min and didn't let him out of my sight when inside. Especially after awakening and after a meal or vigorous playing. And as someone else mentioned let your puppy know how happy you are that he did potty for you outside, act like you just won the lottery.
At night since I am a light sleeper he was confined to my bedroom and if I heard him stirring around I took him out. He was not crated at night, he had a bed beside mine on the floor. When you get that new puppy make sure to share it with us, we love pictures on here.
