I need tips on teaching Sheldon to not eat EVERYTHING!!! If he's outside by himself for longer than it takes to potty, he grazes on the sticks, weeds, and anything back there, and then he gets diarrhea, which is miserable for all of us. How on earth do I get him to stop? His leave it is perfect, but obviously, I have to be watching him. I would like to be able to leave him outside/inside by himself without worrying. I'm about ready to muzzle him while he's outside so he can't graze

How old is he? My guy loved getting into everything as a puppy digging in the garden, chewing on bushes, chewing on the deck. I went out with him always until he was about 8 months old. I didn't really use his leave it I just interrupted him by walking into him and not letting him have access to whatever he was doing that I didn't like. Eventually he would loose interest and as he got older he just stopped trying. Once he no longer tried when I was with him then I started leaving him out for short periods by himself but supervised from inside.
Actually as a young puppy he was horrible from the day I got him trying to eat gravel and wood chips. I pretty much had to avoid these things till he was 4 or 5 months I just really wanted to make sure it didn't become a bad habit. |

he's stopped eating rocks, but he's 8 months old...he'll be 9 months on the 20th. It's super frustrating, cause no matter what I do, he doesn't lose interest...

Have you always supervised him in the yard it sounds like you occasionally let him out unsupervised? The bad thing about letting him alone in the yard even once before he is ready is that the behaviour gets practised and is then even harder to eliminate. The reason I didn't bother with the leave it is because once you are not there it will mean nothing.
I literally had a leash on my guy while out in the yard with him until he was 6 months (just a drag line) then did leash off but still me out with him for 2 more months. Wow I am just realizing what a naughty puppy I had ![]() I do not like muzzling to fix these problem because usually the muzzle goes on so the dog does not need to be supervised. I know you don't mean to muzzle him and leave him out all day or anything but still I am just not a fan of the muzzle because it just covers up the problem. |

I don't let him out unsupervised...but my SO does every so often...drives me craaazzzyyyyyy. I'm half joking about the muzzle thing....but if it comes down to it, it might be a good training tool...

This is my greatest pet peeve with dogs. When Hunter was 9-11 weeks he would graze on everything under the sun. I once pulled glass out of his mouth (I watched him like a hawk and saw him snatch it up). Such a terrible phase to go through.

Same thing here, today I found a piece of roof tile in Coopers mouth. No idea where that came from!
Molly was the same as a pup but at some stage she grew out of it, I am hoping he will too.
