Default Climbing on the ex-pen?

Most of the time Viking is very well behaved in the ex-pen. However sometimes he gets really excited and puts his paws up on it trying to climb over it or knock it down. This happens when he's hyper and we're not giving him what he wants. Now I understand that if he is tired out more he'll be less inclined to do that, but I don't really want him doing it at all.

He used to do it a lot more but I ignore the behavior and, if he starts doing it too much, just crate him for 30-60 seconds and let him out again. Saying "No" doesn't really work right now. I'm worried about it continuing as he gets bigger. He doesn't do it often right now.

Anyone have any tips on getting this to stop?

How old is he? Kopper really outgrew his ex-pen right around 14 weeks. Much bigger than that and they just knock it over.

10.5 weeks. He has a ton of space, we just use the ex-pen to separate him from the couch and cut off half of the living room.

Yep, get a spray bottle , fill it with water and when he climbs on the side, don't say anything, just spray him.He will not know where the water is coming from, but if it happens everytime he jumps on the pen, he will not like it.

Pan climbed his too. I'd look over and this 10lb puppy would be dangling 3 feet up, lol. I just had to supervise him more, give him plenty to chew on. I never could leave him in the pen, had to crate him if I wasn't around.

That's pretty much what Viking is like. If I leave him alone he'll try to climb out or escape. He's in his crate if I'm not able to be right there. I didn't even think dogs could climb like that. It's almost as if he's a little monkey. Come to think of it, he even sounds like a monkey too when he talks sometimes...

Malice climbed over the puppy gate all the time when she was little.

She moved onto bigger and better things, wire crates and plastic crates cannot contain her unless I put locks all over the crate.

Rocco climbed over the puppy gate after a week. He had to go buy a crate/cage.

I had a pup from a recent GSD litter climb the pen at 7 weeks old. The next day she and her compadres were placed in a 6 foot chainlink kennel. She climbed to the top.

She went to a Mondio home where she can fully utilize her craziness
